Why we no longer support diverting emails to your Internet provider or web-based mail account

We no longer support diverting emails to your Internet provider or web-based mail account such as BT, Yahoo! or HotMail because these companies have started to block delivery of these messages. However, they do not tell us when they choose to block your mails so it relies, at the moment, on you realising that your emails are no longer delivered.

However, most of these providers now allow you to retrieve emails from our server so you can follow their instructions for accessing your mail.

Web-based retrieval of mails from webmail

Web-based mail. You can already use web-based mail to access any email account which at the moment is being diverted. You can retrieve your messages from any online computer at http://webmail.your-domain.com/ using the account's full email address and password supplied by art71. We have installed WebMail (Horde) which provides a simple interface to manage your mail. More information on using WebMail

Network retrieval of mails on office-based mail server

Network retrieval of mail. If you have a networked office computer system with many users, we strongly urge you to invest in a mail server in-house with a competent IT professional to help you manage the mail accounts. We are happy to change something called the MX and A records which control delivery of mail at your domain so they are delivered straight to your office mail server. Please ask your IT technical adviser to contact us direct so we can re-configure the mail records for your web domain.

Retrieve your emails using email software such as Outlook Express or through your mobile phone or Blackberry

Retrieval of mail using your office computer email software. Using your email address and password supplied by art71, you can use Outlook Express, Thunderbird or your favourite email software to retrieve your emails. Links to instructions are further down this page. In the example which follows, the email address is your-name@your-domain.com and the website name is www.your-domain.com

The settings will be similar for any other email software on both PC's and Macs. The important settings to understand are:

  • The account name is always your full email account address, for example
    your-name@your-domain.com
  • The outgoing and incoming mail server (the tecchie speak for these are POP and SMTP servers) are always in the format
    mail.your-domain.com
  • The options for secure PASSWORD authentication should NOT BE selected.
  • The options for secure SERVER authentication should always be selected and set to Use the same settings as the incoming mail server.
  • Once you have set up your mail and tested the settings you may get an error message from your Internet Service Provider. Please read the error message carefully and edit the outgoing mail server as per their instructions. The instructions below include a section on how to modify the settings of your mail account.
