Google look determined to dominate online sales and recently offered Google Checkout but their list of restricted items which can be sold is wide-ranging. We recommend WorldPay for a fully integrated card merchant service. We also support Protx which is particularly useful if you use Sage software for your accounts. For "cheaper" services we also support Mal's e-commerce and can integrate where suitable an existing PayPal account in to your website.

WorldPay

The WorldDirect package from Worldpay enables you to accept a wide range of payments over the internet. This allows you to accept credit and debit card payments in most global currencies. Setting up a WorldPay internet merchant account is fairly easy. Worldpay do a simple credit check and over 90% of applicants are approved in just 7-10 days.

You can add other WorldPay solutions to the WorldDirect package including their billing, internet terminal (for payment by phone, fax and mail), anti-fraud and fraud protection solutions.

Google Checkout

Google have recently offered a low-cost merchant account which has some limitation in formatting the final confirmation screen and, more importantly, has a long list of restricted items.

Transaction Fees from 2008. When you use Google Checkout to process your sales, the fee is 1.5% + £0.15 per transaction. There are no monthly, setup or gateway service fees and no charge to transfer funds to your bank.

Free Transaction Processing for AdWords Advertisers. If you are an AdWords advertiser, you are eligible for free transaction processing for some or all of your Google Checkout sales each month. For every £1 you spend on AdWords each month, you can process £10 in sales the following month for free through Google Checkout.

Sign up for the service here: checkout.google.com using your Google Adwords login if you already have a Google Adwords account. Read the list of Restricted items and contact Google first with a link to your website and wait for confirmation that you can use Google Checkout.

PayPal

Founded in 1998, PayPal, an eBay Company, enables any individual or business with an email address to securely, easily and quickly send and receive payments online. PayPal charges Premier and Business accounts to receive payments. Personal accounts are free, but may not receive debit or credit card payments so we recommend the full business account.

PayPal's Premier/Business Account allows you to accept credit card payments from around the world. The fees are:

* If you receive a payment from a user in another country, an additional cross-border fee will be charged. The cross-border fee is an additional 0.5% for Canadian Dollar, Euro and Yen payments, and an additional 1% for US Dollar payments. You can apply for the Merchant Rate once your account is in good standing and you are turning over at least 1000 USD per month approx.

+ If your transaction involves a currency conversion, it will be completed at a retail foreign exchange rate determined by PayPal, which is adjusted regularly based on market conditions. This exchange rate includes a 2.5% spread above the wholesale exchange rate at which PayPal obtains foreign currency, and the spread is retained by PayPal. The specific exchange rate that applies to your multiple currency transaction will be displayed at the time of the transaction.
